Construction continues on the Mercer County Trail System!!!

Update December 2011

Jeff Lusk reports that everyone is busy making a list and checking it twice.  Plans are about complete for the coming year.  The actual trail construction on the new Pocahontas Trail System has been completed.  Construction equipment has been pulled out for maintenance work in adjacent systems.  Pocahontas trail head construction remains on the list of spring projects.  Formal opening of the Trail can then take place.  That’s a New Year’s wish we are counting on.

Update November 2011

Trail permits are now on sale for the 2012 season.  The permit you purchase now will be good through all of 2012.  Permit prices are unchanged, so a full year of riding the Hatfield-McCoy Trails still costs about the same as a one day green fee on a golf course or a lift ticket on the ski slope and considerably less than a whitewater rafting trip.  ATV / dirt bike riding is a value in the market place for outdoor and extreme sports.  Ashland Resort has plenty of permits on hand in the camp store.  Pick yours up when you check in.
Pocahontas Trail System - Based upon the latest word from Jeff Lusk, Executive Director of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, actual trail work on the Pocahontas Trail System was substantially completed by the end of November.  There is still no word on securing a site for a Pocahontas Trail Head and Welcome Center.  Jeff and his staff are focused on nailing that down ASAP.  They continue to work with the Town of Matoaka and local landowners to license and build trails into Town for their municipal connector.  Riders are going to find the Town and local businesses to be very ATV friendly.  By the same token, local business in and around the Town of Bramwell can’t wait for trail head completion.
The Indian Ridge Trail System and Ashland Resort will connect directly to the Pocahontas Trail System.  In fact, if you map the Pocahontas Trail System, Indian Ridge Trail System, and Pinnacle Creek Trail Systems together, you will find that Ashland Resort is smack dab in the middle of what will be the largest connected system of managed trails in the eastern United States.  That’s what we call the ‘Sweet Spot.’    Make reservations now for 2012.

Update October 2011

TrailFest was a huge record setting success:  Record attendance; Best weather ever;  Most fun ever;  Best Trail Fest ever.  Mark your calendar for next year, October 4 – 8, 2012.  Gilbert, WV will again be the hosting location.

Pocahontas Trail [Mercer County] update:  Leaves are falling and trail construction continues.  Jeff Lusk, Executive Director, Hatfield-McCoy Trails, reports all trail work except for trail signage should be completed by mid-November.  Actual trail opening will be delayed until spring when the Trailhead and welcome center near Bramwell should be completed.  In the interim, H-M is continuing to work with the Town of Matoaka as they identify, map, license and build the municipal trail connector.  The Pocahontas Trail will also connect to the Indian Ridge Trail System [Trail # 93] on the mountain above Ashland Resort.

Trail permits for 2012 will go on sale on November 18, 2011, in time for Thanksgiving outings.  All permit vendors, including Ashland Resort, should have the 2012 permits ready and waiting.  As in the past, 2012 trail permits will be good from the date of purchase through December 31, 2012.  By the way, permits make great Christmas gifts.
